2 families without homes after massive landslide in Avery County

AVERY COUNTY, NC (WJHL) -

Two families are without homes after a massive landslide on Highway 194 in Avery County, NC Monday night.   Two lanes of Highway 194 were wiped away and electricity crews say the landslide tore down five power poles and transformers.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says more slides are expected.  To make matters worse, rain is expected in the region which could make matters worse.  Those worried the most, the people who live down below the highway.

"We were just sitting there getting ready to go to bed and we saw a spark.  I looked out the window and I told my wife to run.  She grabbed our 5-year-old daughter and ran towards the front door," said Robbie Bailey, his home was destroyed by the landslide.

Bailey says his family made it out just in time.

"It happened so fast we didn't really get to see much we didn't know what was going on," said Bailey.

Bailey and his family now have to stay with his mother, who lives just 200 feet away.

"All of the sudden everyone was yelling, everyone was yelling to make sure the kids were outside," said Darlene Bailey, Robbie's mother.

Darlene says it's a miracle nobody was seriously hurt.  "The Lord had to be with them," said Darlene.

Robbie Bailey agrees. "I'm very thankful were here today," said Robbie.

However, the family is worried once more because rain is expected in the area and the road up above is unstable.

"If we get any more rain is going to come down, it's been coming down all day," said Darlene.

Avery County officials say that is a concern for them as well.

"We'll lose some more before it's all said and done.  We will have to get out the bad material and replace it," said Charles Reinhart, with the Avery County Maintenance Department.

Officials say it will be a very long time before there is traffic on this area of the highway again.  That's the least of the concerns for the families who live in this neighborhood.  Collectively the neighborhood lost two homes, five cars, three horses and numerous other pets, but they say they are thankful that nobody lost their life.
