Cowpens Dexter Cows Win Top National Prize

COWPENS, S.C. -

Charles Townson has two of the most popular cows in Cowpens. His red Dexter breeds just took home two top honors at the National Dexter Cattle Association competition in Springfield, MO.

Townson runs BeaverTree Farms. He is a high school history teacher by day and a cattle farmer by night. He says his farm is small, but compared to those in the cow country of Texas, it’s considered a top contender.

“We’re just extremely proud of our herd here,” said Townson. “We have great stock. To be able to compete and win at the national level is a real achievement for us."

So how does he do it? He says it's about handling his herd.

“I touch or handle every animal on the farm every day,” said Townson. “I think that's one thing that distinguishes us from a bigger breeder because I actually lay my hands on everyone of these animals every day."

In competition, the small Dexter cows are judged on appearance and their disposition.
