HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. -

Henderson County Sheriff's Deputies charged a man with cruelty to animals after finding two donkeys and a horse in what deputies call extremely poor condition.

Jeffrey Scott Landers, 39, of 3766 Howard Gap Road, in Hendersonville was arrested July 13. Deputies say they received a tip about the neglected animals in a barn in Etowah.  They also seized the horse, donkeys, and six goats and took them into protective custody.

In addition to the three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, Landers was cited under the county ordinance for the mistreatment of animals. According to deputies, Landers relinquished ownership of the six goats in lieu of a $3000 civil penalty. He was released under $1500 secured bond.
