GREENVILLE, N.C. -

EMS teams are implementing a new CPR technique that centers around constant compressions and not racing patients to the hospital.

9 On Your Side is digging deeper into "Pit Crew CPR" and how emergency responders say it'll save more lives.

"This is this person's one chance to make it and we're going to do everything we can right here on scene."

It's the main element of Pit Crew CPR that catches people off guard: when your heart stops, paramedics won't be rushing you to the hospital anymore. Instead, they'll conduct continuous CPR until you're revived or pronounced dead.

It's a continuous compression method now backed by the American Heart Association and 9 On Your Side got an inside look.

Paramedic Mekenzie Cox says some people get frustrated when EMS teams do not rush their loved one to the hospital. It's unconventional but Cox says, with advancements in EMS training, it's no longer a necessity with cardiac arrest patients.

"Our paramedics and EMT's that work for our department can do everything on scene that they'll be able to do in the hospital in an emergency situation for cardiac arrest like this," said Cox.

Emergency responders say any CPR is better than no CPR so there's no reason to stop using the old method if you're already certified.

All fire stations in Pitt County are now offering free continuous CPR practice for people in the community. They say they cannot certify you but practice always makes perfect.
