WILMINGTON, N.C. -

A veterinary clinic in Burgaw is tending to a kitten after it took a 45-mile ride under the hood of a pickup truck.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports a group of employees at Cardinal Metal Works in Burgaw rescued the dehydrated and scared cat after a coworker arrived Wednesday afternoon and said the animal was stuck.

The group tried to edge the cat out of the fan housing, but it ducked every time they came close. After about an hour, the group dismantled part of the fan to help them grab the animal.

Rescuer Sheila Johnson said the cat's tail will have to be amputated because it was shredded and cut. All six rescuers said they will split the approximately $300 it will cost to treat the cat.
