Crews Find Missing Teen Safe on Lake Hartwell - July 22, 2013

A teenager - reported missing Sunday night on Lake Hartwell - has been found safe.

15 year old Noah Grey Roach was waiting at a dock on a personal watercraft Sunday evening when a storm hit. Roach drifted away from the dock and sought shelter.

"When it started picking up I was alright  but then I started shivering," says Roach, "I was tired of riding around, I kept turning it off because the rain hurts when you're driving through it and then I just ended up under the dock."

Roach spent the night under the dock on the Georgia side. He was spotted Monday morning by Dean Cooke, a man who went out searching for Roach, and by the Department of Natural Resources' plane.

"I know the lake pretty well, so I grabbed my son and my wife," Cooke says, "We had been riding about 15, 20 minutes and finally went up a creek and saw him, he was sitting on his jet ski."

Cooke tied the watercraft to his boat and Roach rode in a DNR boat back to his family.

"I started tearing up and my mom came and met me on the dock, it was just emotional," Roach says.

Roach's family and rescue teams searched all night for him after he didn't return to shore or the landing on a personal watercraft.

Anderson County Technical Rescue was one of the teams helping search for Roach. They, like many emergency response teams, have seen an increase in incidents this year because of all the rain.

In 2012 there were 6 water rescues during the entire year. So far, there have been 13 water rescues, including swift water rescues to get people out of cars in rushing water.

The search continues Monday on Lake Hartwell at Sadlers Creek State Park for a missing teenager.

Anderson County emergency crews said , a 15-year-old went out on Lake Hartwell around 9:30 Sunday night on a personal watercraft.

He then began having engine trouble.

The teen was supposed to meet his family at the park boat ramp.

When his family went out to look for him, they couldn't find him.

Anderson County Technical Rescue, DNR, Anderson County Sheriff's Department and Anderson County CERT teams had boats on the water searching for him.
