For this royal baby, Prince William lends a hand

Posted: Updated:

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge unveiled the newest member of the Royal Family to an eager British audience on Tuesday in London, a moment that also demonstrated a subtle and important change in the royals.

In 1982, Prince Charles and Diana introduced baby William at St. Mary's Hospital with a brief, happy appearance as well-wishers cheered. There was no mass of media at the moment, and they did not answer questions.

The couple got into a car and Diana held William as they were driven to Kensington Palace. Diana wore a green polka-dot dress and Charles wore a dark suit, blue shirt and tie. And after they arrived at Kensington, Charles went off to play polo.

On Tuesday, though, the place was the same but the scene much different. Hundreds of media awaited the royals. Kate Middleton wore a blue polka dot dress, echoing Diana's look, but William wore a simple blue shirt, open at the collar.

But what William did, rather than what he wore, spoke volumes. William grabbed the car seat and put that in the back for his son – a simple act familiar to millions of fathers, but one certainly a royal could have had someone else do.

And then with Kate and the baby in the back, William took the wheel and drove the family to Kensington Palace.

It was two acts that spoke volumes about the changing roles of fathers, and

"I know I'm not from the UK but seeing William drive Kate and the baby home really makes me love him more," tweeted EmilyClarie97.

"I respect William and Kate for driving off like a normal mum and dad and didn't have someone to drive them ," tweeted Sladey96.

"Thrilled to watch William drive his new little family home! Here's where the journey begins :) enjoy parenthood Will&Kate," tweeted mammybear84.
