Burglars are using social media to steal when you’re on vacation - WSPA.com

Is social media helping thieves in the Triangle?

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

Everyday, millions post to social media where, when and with whom they are going on vacation.

It seems harmless right? Wrong. Counties all over the Triangle are seeing a spike in home burglaries, and authorities say social media could play a role in that increase.

Take a quick drive through West Cary, and you'll see quintessential America. Pristine homes, with polished cars in every driveway. But this idyllic subdivision has seen a rash of 31 break-ins from June to July.

Captain Don Hamilton with the Cary Police Department said, "That's unusual to have that many in a concentrated area for this long a period of time."

Hamilton said most of the burglaries have something in common. The homes were often unoccupied for days. Many of the families were on vacation.

"In some cases, they're kicking in the front door. In other cases, they're prying the back window off" said Hamilton.

He said there's no way to tell how much social media could've played a role in these break-ins, but police tell us, it's a vital tool for thieves.

Authorities suggest the following:

  • Don't automatically share your location in real time.
  • Change your settings to friends only.
  • Don't put pictures of your shiny new purchases.
