COLLETTSVILLE, N.C -

North Carolina rescuers are searching for a man swept away in a rain-swollen creek after recovering the body of a 10-year-old girl who had been swimming with him.

Caldwell County spokeswoman LouAnn Kincaid said Sunday a 48-year-old man from Charlotte was missing in Wilson Creek nearly 100 miles north of Charlotte. Kincaid said the man and the 10-year-old girl whose body was recovered Saturday evening were members of different families who had come from Charlotte to relax and swim in the Appalachian foothills creek.

Downstream in Catawba County, spokesman Jim Dickerson said crews were checking out reports that 130 homes and other buildings were damaged by a slow-moving rain system that dumped up to a foot of rain Saturday in some parts of Catawba, Lincoln and Cleveland counties.
