Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Search warrants in the case of a man killed in June and found by the side of the road near N.C. Highway 98 indicate his wife believed he was having an affair, and she said was having drug and alcohol problems.

Jose Manuel Perez, 64, of 12412 Schoolhouse St. in Raleigh was found dead  with severe, sharp-force wounds. His wife, former school teacher Joanna Madonna, faces first-degree murder charges.

The warrants describe authorities going to the Schoolhouse residence after discovering the body and describe a conversation with Madonna's daughter, Michelle Lopez.

"Michelle Lopez added during the conversation that her mother (Joanna Madonna) and her step-father, Jose Perez, had recently been fighting. Michelle Lopez said her mother believed Jose was having an affair," the search warrants said.

Michelle said her mother told her she had recently discovered emails between Jose and a female in Florida. Michelle added her mother had confronted Jose with the emails. He denied having an affair.

Madonna later arrived at the residence. She said she had not seen her husband since June 15.

"Joanna said her husband had been drinking a lot recently and had been abusive," the report said.

Another daughter, Rachel , described how said mother and father left the previous night

"Rachel Lopez said Joanna Madonna returned later on June 15, 2013, without Jose Perez. Rachel told investigators that Joanna told her Joe Perez had assaulted her with a knife and injured Joanna's arm. Rachel Lopez said Joanna Madonna was hot and sweaty when she returned to the 12412 Schoolhouse St. residence.

The search warrants also said authorities "are confident that Ms. Madonna had a firearm in her possession some time during June 15 and 16, 2013."

The search warrants said Madonna told investigators her husband "was drinking again" and "hanging out with drug users."

"Joanna said she had asked her husband to leave the house and get help," the warrants said.

She told investigators he was leaving "to see his sponsor" and she hadn't seen him since"
