SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

The 12-foot alligator shot and killed by authorities in Jacksonville last week is being stuffed in Smithfield.

The massive gator was estimated to weigh near 500 pounds when police shot it three times. But new estimates put the weight of the animal closer to 700 pounds.

"When I got home and looked at it first thing this morning, there are a few expletives that come to mind when you see something that large. It's a huge dinosaur-looking animal. It's very big," said taxidermist Jim Williams.

The alligator attacked an 80 pound Husky at the Mill Creek Green portion of Henderson Green at Henderson Drive and River Street on July 23.

Williams will eventually skin the alligator and fit it to a mold so it can be displayed at the Onlsow County Environmental Education Center and Library on N.C. Highway 210 in Sneads Ferry.

The process of stuffing the alligator could take 10 months to a year.
