FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. -

Agents with North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement shut down two suspected liquor houses in Fuquay-Varina in July. Now, one of the men charged says it's a misunderstanding.

ALE agents executed search warrants on two homes, one in the 400 block of Cherry Street, the other in the 400 block of Holland Glen Street.

Court documents said Charles Mangum and Paul Jones sold alcohol to undercover agents in June without an ABC license.  Mangum was charged with possession for sale alcoholic beverages without an ABC permit and possession of non-tax-paid alcohol.

Jones was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of non-tax-paid alcohol.

Besides illegal alcohol sales, agents said illegal gambling was also taking place.  Agents took cash, marijuana, beer and liquor from those addresses.

Mangum disputes the charge, saying he was throwing a birthday party for his daughter, and simply asked that people contribute money to pay for it.

"I would love to know the one that said I sold them something. You know what I'm saying?" Mangum said.  "When you sell somebody something, you put the money in their hand, right? If nobody put the money in their hand, you ain't sold them nothing, right?"

Mangum and Jones were cited and did not serve jail time.
