Troopers Look For Semi Truck Involved In Fatal Hit and Run

Posted: Updated:

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is looking for a semi truck they believe was involved in a hit and run that killed a person.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler has identified a pedestrian struck while walking on Interstate 85 in Gaffney just before 1 a.m. today.

Fowler says 43 year old John David Swofford of 104 Camelot Drive , Gaffney, was walking near the white line on the north bound shoulder of I-85 at the 91 mile marker when he stepped into the path of a tractor-trailer rig that was also headed north in the slow lane of traffic and was struck. “Following the initial impact, the victim was thrown into the path of a second trailer-trailer truck headed north in the passing lane and was struck a second time. His body came to rest in the median on the south bound side of the cable barrier. “The impact was so great he was knocked out of his shoes.” Fowler said.

Wearing only pants and shoes, Swofford had no identification on his person at the time of the incident. “After searching for hours, information was received just before noon today that lead to Swofford. He reportedly left his home about midnight and never returned,” Fowler said.

Fowler said an autopsy will be performed Thursday to assist with his investigation.

The vehicle is described as a blue or brown Peterbilt style 18 wheeler with a 53' enclosed box trailer.

Anyone who may know who this man is asked to call the Cherokee County Coroner's Office at 864-487-6225.

If you have any information about the crash, please call the Highway Patrol at *47 or 864-489-3116.
