Police: Man hit, killed lying in Raleigh street

Investigators believe a man was lying in the street when he was hit and killed Saturday night near Pettigrew Street and New Bern Avenue. RALEIGH, N.C. -

Investigators believe a man was lying in the street when he was hit and killed Saturday night near Pettigrew Street and New Bern Avenue.

Dwight Emory Smith, 26, was found lying on the pavement when officers responded to a report of a pedestrian-involved traffic collision around 9:45 p.m. Saturday.

Smith died after being transported to WakeMed.

Investigators suspect the incident to be a hit and run, and efforts remain underway to identify and locate both the vehicle and its driver.

Raleigh Police reponded to the area around 9:45 p.m. concerning a report of a pedestrian-involved traffic collision.
