6-year-old accidentally shoots toddler in south VA

Posted: Updated:

A 6-year-old accidentally shot his/her 1-year-old girl sister in the back Sunday afternoon, the Danville police department confirmed.

The police department said the little girl is currently in stable condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Police say the 6-year-old found a .38, a hand gun,  belonging to a man living in the home where this all happened.

Investigators say the child fired it. The bullet passed through a bedroom wall and found the 1-year-old girl as she was playing in another room.

Danville police captain Matt Carter said the owner of the gun could be facing a Class 3 misdemeanor charge. Class 3 misdemeanors are punishable by a maximum $500 fine, according to the Code of Virginia.

The charge would be for allowing the child to find the gun. Convictions on Class 3 misdemeanors carry no jail time.

"This situation," Carter said, "is one that could happen to any one of us in the community if you are not aware of where your firearms are stored or if they are secured."

Carter bottom lined it this way:  "Take the time to go look [to see if your guns are secure].  Buy a gun safe.  Get a gun lock.  Do something."

Carter said police would likely release more information about this case later this week.
