Graffiti at VFW Post Painted Over Graffiti at VFW Post Painted Over

Graffiti plastered over Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5996 is now gone.

Carey McCord, a U. S. Army Veteran, painted over the vandalism on Tuesday. He says when he saw the damage, he knew he had to do something.

"[They]desecrated the emblem on the door, that probably hurt more than anything," McCord says.

The damage was discovered last week. Vandals were spotted by nearby bar patrons in the early hours on Friday. They chased the vandals away but not before damage had been done.

"The only way to describe it is my heart dropped; it was disheartening," says the post commander, Tex Hughes.

Now all the symbols are painted over, a shock to Hughes.

"That was like wow," says Hughes,"I don't even know who it was who came here this morning and painted."

Medals of America in Fountain Inn will be donating a new VFW emblem.

It's a crime that will cost a local VFW thousands to fix.

Over the weekend, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5996 on Highway 29 was vandalized with gang symbols.

The Anderson County Sheriff's Department said graffiti of gang symbols like these are common on stop signs and buildings all over the area, but it's never seen a VFW targeted like this.

The symbols were sprayed on two sides of the building and on a storage shed..

But the vandals didn't stop at spray painting. They also stole four security cameras from the roof

But even without that security camera footage, the Sheriff's Department said its gang unit is working what they're calling a promising lead Monday night.

This vandalism comes with a heftyprice tagg -- all in all, nearly four-thousand dollars worth of damage.

On Monday afternoon, a veteran swung by the VFW post and left a note saying he plans to donate the paint to fix up the graffiti Tuesday morning.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call 1-888-CRIME SC.
