GREENVILLE (Furman Release) -- Furman head football coach Bruce Fowler welcomed 87 players to campus Sunday afternoon in preparation for the Paladins' preseason camp, and the team held its first practice Monday morning at 6:30 a.m. in Paladin Stadium.
The Paladins' will practiced in shorts and helmets on the stadium's new Shaw Sports Turf's new "PowerBlade Bolt" turf, which was installed over the summer to replace the original natural grass field. Monday's practice lasted just over two hours.
"It's always exciting when the players return to campus and you kick off a new season," said Fowler, who is entering his third season as mentor of the Paladin program. "So much work and preparation has gone into this program to get to the point, so it's thrilling as a team to get out on the field and get underway."
The Paladins will practice in Paladin Stadium from 6:30-8:45 a.m. each day through Friday before undergoing their first twin practice day on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Friday morning's session will mark the squad's first practice in full pads.
Furman returns 15 starters off last year's squad, including nine on defense, six on offense, and both specialist positions.
Furman's preseason roster features 11 seniors, 12 juniors, 19 sophomores, and 45 freshmen.
The Paladins kick off the 2013 campaign on August 31 at Gardner-Webb.
