Merrill to be officially sworn in as superintendent of Wake Co. Schools

CARY, N.C. -

Dr. Jim Merrill will be officially sworn in as the new superintendent of Wake County Schools.

The ceremony takes place Tuesday at 5 p.m. at school board headquarters in Cary. Merrill has already been on the job since Aug. 1.

As Wake County School superintendent, Merrill says his top priorities are increasing student achievement, and seeing that voters approve an $810 million school construction bond this fall.

Earlier this week, Merrill downplayed the politics that have often defined the school board.

"I'm either naïve, completely insensitive, or I don't just plain feel the political atmosphere, however I'm an academic leader. I'm not a political leader and as much I might have to step into political arenas, that's not my comfort," said Merrill.

Merrill replaces Tony Tata who was fired last year. He comes from Virginia Beach where he served as superintendent of schools.
