Rain Creates, Delays Major Road Projects In Union County

Posted: Updated:
UNION COUNTY, S.C. -

Drivers will need to avoid five major road construction sites in Union County. SCDOT officials say rain has forced them to close several roads and delay two bridge projects.

The closed bridges are forcing drivers to take a 16 mile detour.

The biggest construction delay is at Gist Bridge Road. The road was closed in January for structural repairs. It was supposed to reopen in May, but District Four says it won’t reopen until late August.

Once Gist Bridge is repaired drivers will have a shorter eight-mile detour.

Rain also delayed bridge work on Sulphur Springs Road in Union County. The SCDOT has no official open date for the road.

To add to the list, Union County crews are also working on weather-related repairs on Rice Avenue Extension, Dillard Road in the Wildcat area and Bruce O. Wilson Road in the Monarch area. These roads are currently closed, and have no set date to re-open.
