RALEIGH, N.C. -

Raleigh Police say embezzlement may be the catalyst behind the murder of a political strategist by her husband's best friend.

Detectives have seized the banks records of Jonathan Broyhill, who is charged in the April 22 murder of 29-year-old Jamie Hahn and assault on Jamie Hahn's husband, Nation Hahn, at the couple's North Raleigh home.

Although a motive behind the murder has not been officially disclosed, detectives believe claims of embezzlement by Broyhill may have been the catalyst.

A search warrant executed July 12 says during the course of the murder investigation, detectives learned that Broyhill was suspected of embezzlement from Jamie Hahn's business, Blue Sky Strategies.

"As this investigation has progressed, it has been determined that these financial documents may provide a motive for this murder and contain evidence pertaining to the suspected embezzlement," the warrant said.

Former U.S. Representative Brad Miller previously said Jamie Hahn planned to look into how Broyhill handled funds from Miller's recent political campaign.

The Hahns and Broyhill were closely connected to the Democratic Party, and Miller had hired Blue Sky Strategies to help his campaign. Broyhill, who grew up in Lenoir with Nation Hahn, worked for Blue Sky.

Miller had represented parts of central North Carolina in Congress before deciding not to run in 2012.

"There is reason to think he did use campaign money improperly," Miller said in a telephone interview. "Jamie Hahn was going to get all the campaign records from him and look at them herself."

Miller said the campaign's finance actions caught the attention of the Federal Election Commission late last year.

FEC records show that a small handful of Miller's donors received refunds in excess of what they donated. However, it is unclear if the donors actually received the money. Broyhill would have had access to those records.

A neighbor said that Nation Hahn had indicated that there had been a financial dispute with Broyhill.
