Gov. McCrory helps clear way for more NC Rural Center grants

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Governor Pat McCrory announced Friday that the Office of State Budget and Management has authorized payments for 34 grants funded by the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center.

The grants total more than $1.7 million.

"The Office of State Budget and Management is working diligently to review these grants so payments can proceed in a timely manner," said Gov. McCrory said in a written release. "I applaud their effort to ensure accountability while honoring our commitment to these rural communities."

So far this week, OSBM has authorized payments totaling just under $960,000 related to the Rural Center's Clean Water Bond Program to Tyrell County Water and Sewer as well as to Sanford and East Yancey.

Since Aug. 1, OSBM has authorized payments for 51 grants submitted for funding by the Rural Center. The grants total more than $3.4 million.

On Thursday, the state Commerce Department temporarily hired Laura Kendall to help with the transition of the center after an audit last month revealed the nonprofit agency failed to provide proper oversight of millions in grants.
