Preliminary work on 'Crawleigh' project begins Monday

Posted:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The NC DOT says preliminary work for the massive reconstruction project of I-40 will start Monday night.

The project, known as "Crawleigh," will begin near the Rock Quarry Road exit Monday, with patch work, leading up to the major construction, which will span more than 11 miles from US-1 in Cary to Highway 64/264 in Raleigh.

DOT crews say the road has to be completely redone from the ground up.

The project is expected to cost between $130 and $170 million and will take more than two years to finish.

"I will be doing everything I can to avoid I-40. I'll take every side road, back road, get up early, travel late…it's already so bad, the thought of it getting worse makes you want to stay at home," said one driver.

Crews will only be patching the roads first with the intent of keeping the roads in safe traveling condition until full construction starts. The DOT says major construction will start in 2014.

They will be performing roadway patching on both the east and westbound lanes of the interstate, mostly overnight. But drivers may see lane closures and other obstacles.

For real-time travel information at any time, call 511, visit the NCDOT website or follow NCDOT on Twitter.
