Jack Roper

Jack Roper here, we are at the Marsha and Jimmy Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg, at Spartanburg Regional, to give our August Caring for the Carolinas award away to a woman that really deserves it.

Dr James Dunn is with us at the Gibbs Cancer Center and we do want to talk about Jo-Ellen DeLuca in a little bit, how do you know her?

Dr James Dunn, Gibbs Cancer Center

Because she’s a colorectal cancer survivor, and her late husband Ben was also a colorectal cancer survivor, I got involved with them in terms of their support group. Over the years we’ve been able to support her with the Annual Walk for Colon Cancer, which typically in the past has been in the summertime, but we’ve moved it this fall to November.

She’s encouraging people to just go and get checked, because it’s one of the easiest cancers to prevent because actually it is a preventable cancer. So she’s done a lot to have people who have insurance, and people who don’t have insurance, in to get checked.

Patty Allen is with us, Patty, you’re a long time friend of Jo-Ellen, because well, you both had cancer.

Patty Allen, Cancer Survivor & Painter

Yes’ we’ve known each other for about seven and a half years.

Jack Roper

But she had it before you, and her support group, people led you to that, right, because of her support group?

Patty Allen, Cancer Survivor & Painter

Yes, when I was diagnosed with colon cancer my doctor was the one who initially contacted Jo-Ellen, because she does head up the Colon Cancer Solutions support group. I’m so thankful I did meet her, she is a great encourager, and she spoke about the fact that after you have cancer there is life.

Jack Roper

And again, at your lowest point you turned to what you did best and that was art, and tell us about that beautiful picture we’re seeing.

Patty Allen, Cancer Survivor & Painter

Well, I painted my cancer journey and it’s depicting the very, very hard time that I went through, with the tunnel representing the dark time, I show a flower-draped hill in the background and a dove representing the spirit of God watching over me.

Jack Roper

Well, Dr Richard Spenser, good day to you sir.

Richard L. Spencer, Ph.D

Good day to you sir.

Jack Roper

Why is this lady so special to you?

Richard L. Spencer, Ph.D

Jo-Ellen is special to me because my mother had colon cancer. She had a colostomy, but there was no one to help her, she knew absolutely nothing of what was going on. I found out about Jo-Ellen DeLuca, she goes and she has information for people who have colon cancer, who have colostomies, about how they can live their life. Things they would not know if it were not for Jo-Ellen.

Jack Roper

An example for others, and in a moment she’ll be an award winner, There’s the award, grab that and let’s go surprise her, wanna do that?

Jack Roper

Oh, that’s comfy. Are you Jo-Ellen DeLuca?

Jo-Ellen Deluca, Award Recipient

I am

I’m Jack Roper, good to see you.

Jo-Ellen Deluca, Award Recipient

Good to seeing you.

Jack Roper

We heard good things about you, that…

Jo-Ellen Deluca, Award Recipient

Ha, just the good things?

Jack Roper

They’re only good. We heard that you should be our award winner for the month of August. So you are. Let’s give her a hand. Jo-Ellen DeLuca, congratulations.
