RALEIGH, N.C. -

A special mass will be held Tuesday in downtown Raleigh to honor the late Bishop F. Joseph Gossman who passed away Monday.

Gossman died at the age of 83 following a long illness, according to a release from the Raleigh Diocese. He served as Bishop of Raleigh from May 19, 1975 until June 8, 2006, when he retired due to his advancing age.

He was appointed Bishop of Raleigh at the age of 45 by Pope Paul VI on April 8, 1975.

"I ask the faithful in the Diocese to join me in praying for the eternal happiness of Bishop Gossman and to thank God for the gifts of his priestly example and faithful ministry," said the Bishop of Raleigh Michael F. Burbidge in a release.

A mass for Gossman will be held Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 12:10 p.m.

A viewing will be held throughout the day on Aug. 19 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Gossman's funeral Mass will be held Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, followed by his funeral at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Cemetery.
