GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. -

Greenville County authorities are investigating a homicide after a man was found dead behind a home in the Judson community Wednesday.

Master Deputy Jonathan Smith of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said that the man, identified as 54-year-old Billy Michael Patterson, formerly of Greenville, was found in the backyard of a home at 107 3rd Street.

After calling authorities, the person who found Patterson's body attempted to render aid to him, but was unsuccessful. Smith said that investigators learned that Patterson came to the home Tuesday night to visit with the residents.

Greenville County Deputy Coroner Mike Ellis said that Patterson was a transient and known to have lived in vacant homes in the community. He stated that early indications show that he died late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

An autopsy shows Patterson died from multiple blunt force injuries to the body.

The case has been classified a homicide.  The investigation continues.
