RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Cary man was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 15 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to charges related to possessing child pornography.

John Warren Courtney, 47, pled guilty Feb. 15 to one charge of receipt of child pornography, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. An investigation revealed Courtney knowingly received over 4,800 digital images and 240 videos of child pornography.

The Dept. of Justice said Courtney was caught attempting to photograph a child urinating in a public bathroom at Adventure Landing in Raleigh.

An examination of Courtney's computer revealed videos of nude and partially nude young boys in public restrooms at local restaurants and a swimming pool, authorities said.

A release sent out by the Dept. of Justice said a federal judge sentenced Courtney to 180 months behind bars followed by 15 years of supervised release and a fine of $4,000.

The arrest of Courtney was part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative. This national program is aimed at ensuring that criminals exploiting children are effectively prosecuted.
