911 call: Vandemerwe discovered by DOT workers

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Department of Transportation crew was painting guardrails on the Beltline when they discovered the body of Weston Vandemerwe, according to a 911 call released by Raleigh Police Wednesday afternoon.

Vandemerwe's body was discovered Tuesday afternoon just off westbound I-40 near Hammond Road in Raleigh.

Police say they are investigating his death as a hit and run. An accident report released by Raleigh police said the vehicle that struck Vandemerwe was traveling 54 miles per hour at the moment of impact.

The report states Vandemerwe's body was found 95 feet from the point of impact under a guardrail.

The caller said he was driving a "big yellow DOT truck" when he and his fellow workers saw a body and called 911.

"There's somebody laying here dead under the guardrail," the caller said.

The caller said the body was that of a white male and was "decomposed."

"It looks pretty bad," the caller said.

"They are laying under the guard rail," the caller continued.

Vandemerwe's girlfriend, Kaitlyn Holmes, said he was last seen around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near The Oxford bar on Fayetteville Street. She said the two had gotten into an argument outside the bar, which led to her leaving in a cab.

The last time Holmes saw Weston, the 23-year-old was walking down the street; but after having some drinks as the bar, she said he still "had his wits about him."

After a three-day search, Weston's body was located two miles from the downtown Raleigh pub.
