WALHALLA, S.C. -

The Oconee County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of Oconee County to watch out for mail theft after reports from people saying their mail was stolen over the last several weeks.

Deputies say five incident reports show mail thefts in an area around Highway 188 near Lake Keowee and it has neighbors like Frank Johnson on edge.

"Its a nice place to live so yes it makes me kind of mad they are out here doing it. I want to catch them but who knows when or how," Johnson said.

They say two of the mail thefts occurred in the 500 block of Beacon Shores Drive, another one in the 300 block of East Sunrise Lane, another one in the 100 block of Sugarhill Road, and the last in the 300 block of Lake Winds Court.

Investigators say all of these cases have been referred to the Postal Inspector in Greenville.

"It's never a good idea to put mail especially checks in an unsecured mail box," Jimmy Watts with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies want you to hand sensitive mail directly to the postal carrier or place it in a secured post office mailbox. Deputies say there is more than enough information inside your mail to make you the victim of identity theft.

If you have any information on what happened, call the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.
