Community Send-off planned for 760th Engineer Company

Posted: Updated:

An Army Reserve Unit from Southwest Virginia is preparing for a deployment to the Middle East.

The 760th Engineer Company will leave Marion on Thursday, August 22 for training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.

In October, the unit will go to Kandahar, Afghanistan where they will be closing down forward operating bases and packing up and sending equipment back to the United States.

The town of Marion will provide a "Community Send-off" program Thursday at 10:00am, in front of the Town Hall.

According to city spokesman Ken Health, the Mayor will present the soldiers with the American flag that draped the town's 9-11 memorial steel as it was transported from New York City to Marion in September 2011 to fly at their camp until they return home.

The community is encouraged to come out and show their support for our troops and their families.
