Family joins police asking for help in Raleigh hit-and-run death

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The family of a Raleigh man killed in a hit and run are helping police search for answers in their loved one's death.

Dwight Emory Smith, Jr., 26, was found lying on the pavement near Pettigrew Street and New Bern Avenue when officers responded to a report of a pedestrian-involved traffic collision on Aug. 3.

Police said Smith was lying on the pavement of the side street off New Bern Avenue when a car struck him and then left the area. Smith later died at WakeMed, authorities said. 

Police have not identified the car or its driver.

Saturday night, Smith's family joined police in handing out flyers in hopes of finding new leads in the hit and run.

"For them the come out and pass out flyers trying to get someone to come forward, it makes you feel real good," Dwight Smith, the victim's father, said.

Police ask anyone with information that might help them locate the vehicle or its driver to call Raleigh CrimeStoppers at (919) 834-4357 or to go to the CrimeStoppers website.
