SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. -

After an armed robbery turned joyride and kidnapping, Ricky Cota, 24, of Greenville, is behind bars in a Simpsonville jail on Saturday night.

According to a police incident report, the robbery took place at a Spinx located on Fairview Road in Simpsonville, just after 9 a.m.

Police records allege Cota of approaching a vehicle after soliciting a ride from the victim, in which Cota was denied, after which, Cota brandished a gun and entered the vehicle.

Once inside of the vehicle, Cota begin robbing the driver at gunpoint according to the report, taking the man's wallet and having the victim drive to several different locations around Simpsonville threatening to kill him while the gun remained pointed at the victim's head.

During Cota's alleged crime spree, documents indicate that the victim purposely crashed his car into a power pole along W. Georgia Rd, prompting a physical assault just before Cota fled.

Greenville County Sheriff's Office as well as K-9 units assisted Simpsonville Police Department in the search for Cota, and just before noon on Saturday, authorities discovered Cota leaving the area in a taxi cab and arrested him.

Both Cota and the victim were taken to Hillcrest Hospital for treatment and then released.

Cota remains in the custody of Simpsonville Police after a judge denied Cota's bond on Saturday due to the violent nature of the charges against him.

Cota faces a total of five charges, including; armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, first degree assault and battery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
