The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a public meeting in Atlanta to discuss major problems at the Oconee nuclear facility.

NRC and Duke Energy officials will meet August 28 starting at 12:30 p.m. It will be held at the NRC's Region II offices, 245 Peachtree Center Ave., NE, Suite 1200, in Atlanta.

The projects to be discussed include pending plant improvements designed to prevent or mitigate the effects of floods or tornadoes. There will also be discussions about work related to the plant's transition to different fire protection standards as well as enhancements to improve Oconee's ability to cope with possible equipment failures according to the agency.

NRC officials will answer questions from the public after the business portion of the meeting. Some portions of the meeting may be closed to the public if security-related information is discussed.
