SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

Many people across the Upstate have recently contacted 7 On Your Side with concerns that a group of individuals are going door-to-door selling books and trying to kidnap children.

“My main concern was for my grandson,” says Terri Morey of Pauline. “These booksellers had come to my daughter's door and she said they were very pushy and asking a lot of questions. Then I noticed on Facebook that a good many of my friends had the same type of experiences with them."

A quick search on Google pulls up various stories warning people that these alleged booksellers are in fact kidnappers.

“It was a little bit of a relief to see they were in a lot of other places because that made it seem even more unlikely that it was a kidnapping ring,” Morey said.

Morey wasn’t completely convinced though, so she reached out to 7 On Your Side for answers.

“We haven't had anyone going door-to-door selling things and kidnapping children,” said Capt. Art Littlejohn with Spartanburg Police Department.

Officials at Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office haven’t received any complaints about unwanted solicitation either.

While that doesn't mean residents haven't been visited by a salesman recently, both agencies believe the claim that these so-called booksellers are trying to kidnap young kids is a myth.

“Every so often, we do have rumors that are started,” Littlejohn said.

Police recommend homeowners remember if a salesperson comes to the door:

-You are not required to listen to what they have to say.

-You can even ask them to leave your property.

-Under no circumstances should you give out any personal information about yourself, your family or your neighbors.

-Never allow a door-to-door solicitor to come inside your house.
