The high school football season begins across South Carolina Friday with a handful of games in what's become known as Week Zero.
Defending 4A Division I champion Gaffney opens the season on the road in Rock Hill against Northwestern, another powerhouse program. The Trojans were the runner-up to Greenwood in 2012 for the 4A Division II crown.
Other games featuring Upstate teams are Wade Hampton at Dorman, Abbeville at Greenville, Broome at Chesnee, Crescent at Southside Christian School, Pickens at Easley, T.L. Hanna at North Augusta, St. Joseph's at Barnwell and Travelers Rest at West-Oak.
There is a major contest Saturday at noon when Apopka High School from Florida takes on traditional power Byrnes in Duncan. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
Pre-sale ticket estimates as of Friday morning were around 700, according to Spartanburg District 5. However, that number will likely be much higher due to the majority of ticket sales coming at the game on game day.
