SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

Police and fire crews were forced to close a busy Spartanburg street due to a natural gas leak earlier Friday.

Traffic is now flowing, but was closed for hours between Country Club Road and Forest Avenue.

Authorities say a contractor hit a gas line causing it to rupture.  Piedmont Natural Gas was able to stop the leak shortly after 2 p.m.

Nearby residents were evacuated, but have since been allowed to return to their homes.
