FTC Warns Of New Text Message Scam

Scammers are trying a new way to get personal information through text messages.

The Federal Trade Commission has put out a warning so people know what to look out for. The message claims your email account has been hacked. It may look something similar to this:

"User #25384: Your Gmail profile has been compromised. Text back SENDNOW in order to reactivate your account."

If you reply, it gives scammers access to your account.

"I get frustrated because I would rather than not send me the text messages," says Molly Duniho, who has received spam messages in the past.

The FTC suggests the following if you get one of these messages:

  • Don't text back. Legitimate companies won't ask you to verify your identity through unsecured channels, like text or email.
  • Don't click on any links within the message. Links can install malware on your device, and take you to spoof sites to try to get your information.
  • Report the message to your cell phone carrier's spam text reporting number. If you're an AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint or Bell customer, you can forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) free of charge.
