POWDERSVILLE, SC -

A fire at a Anderson County business caused minimal damage after firefighters managed to get it out quickly.

Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson said that firefighters from the Powdersville Fire Department responded to Absorbtech on River Road in Powdersville after receiving a fire alarm call. When firefighters responded, they found a fire inside the building.

Firefighters from the Wren Fire Department responded and managed to quickly get the fire under control. The fire had caused smoke to fill the building, but it was contained to a container of smoldering debris.

Members of the Pelzer Emergency Rescue Squad also responded, but no injuries were reported.

Duke Energy says that removing all of the company's coal ash away from North Carolina's rivers and lakes would take decades and cost up to $10 billion, with the state's electricity customers likely footing nearly all the bill. Duke's North Carolina president Paul Newton told state lawmakers Tuesday the company needs flexibility to consider more cost-efficient options that include leaving much of its 100 million tons of toxic ash in place after being covered with giant tarps and soil.
