HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. -

Police in one Haywood County city say they have identified a man who has impersonated a police officer.

Police in Clyde say the man was identified Tuesday night through several tips that came to them from the public.

Chief Gerard Ball says the man, whose identity has yet to be released, is scheduled to be interviewed soon by police.

Police say the man recently entered two businesses in Clyde posing as a sheriff's deputy.

They say he targeted the Single Stop on August 20 and demanded the cashier turn over any smoking pipes sold in the store that he claimed was evidence in an ongoing investigation.  But they say he quickly left when the cashier was helping other customers.

Later that night, police say a man matching the same description approached the door of the Tobacco Barn as the store was closing.

He identified himself as a deputy, was allowed in the store and said he needed to take all pipes and anything associated with drug paraphernalia in the store.

Ball says a surveillance picture was taken of the man.

The suspect is set to come in to the police station to be interviewed on Thursday.
