Agriculture officials in Henderson County say crop losses from this year's flooding could top $40 million.

Our news coverage partners at The Hendersonville Times-News reports that the estimated losses represent about a third of last year's total receipts for agricultural products.

Members of the county's agricultural advisory committee said Wednesday they expect the losses to increase as rain continues and more farmers report on their crops.

County Extension Director Marvin Owings Jr. said more than 6,600 acres of crops have been destroyed by flooding, fungus and over-saturated soil.

Owings says thousands of more acres of crops have been damaged.

He says about a quarter of the apple crop, half of the hay crop, 60 percent of the tomatoes and 80 percent of green beans have been damaged.
