Pasco school clinic assistant arrested

Posted: Updated:
PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

A clinic assistant at a Wesley Chapel elementary school is accused of taking students' medication.

Pasco deputies arrested Kimberly Dawn Smith at her home on Centennial Road in Dade City.

Deputies say Smith admitted to taking Ritalin intended for students, replacing the medication with dummy pills, and taking the Ritalin herself.

Investigators are analyzing what is in those dummy pills.

School district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe says Smith went through all the proper background checks and nothing showed up.

Cobbe says the district is now looking at its policies.

"We now are talking that we need to make sure that if someone is licensed, even if they're not applying for a position that requires a license, that we do check it out and we're also talking about doing an annual review of every licensed professional," said Cobbe.

Officials say Smith resigned her position immediately after her arrest.

Smith will be charged with possession of a controlled substance.  More charges could be pending.
