U.S. Military intervention in Syria protest in Tampa

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Activists from the Tampa Bay area gathered at the corner of Dale Mabry Highway and Gandy Boulevard in Tampa this evening to protest possible U.S. Military intervention in Syria. A number of organizations will be participating in the protest including St. Pete for Peace, The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign, Nature Coast Coalition for Peace and Justice, The Peace and Freedom Party of Florida, The Refuge, the Uhuru Solidarity Movement and Catholic Worker Pinellas.

"If we bomb Syria, the United States would become al-Qaeda's Air Force," said St. Pete for Peace spokesperson Marianne Huber. "Further, we know the U.S. government lied about Iraq WMDs, now they're lying about Syrian chemical weapons."

Dozens showed up and lined each corner of the intersection.  Melissa Baird is also with St. Pete for Peace.   "We don't need to get into another war."  Said Baird.  "We don't even know which side we should be supporting. The rebels have been using sarin gas. Assad is a horrible dictator and we're at risk of Russia and Iran coming back at us if we get involved with this one."

Others shared similar beliefs.  Christina Petra doesn't believe the United States government is being honest with citizens.  "I don't even believe our government when they say that the Asaad regime has used chemical weapons on their own people."  Said Petra.  "I don't think that's been proven. "
