Man killed in St. Pete officer-involved shooting

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

St. Petersburg Police say a fight about dogs led to a fatal officer involved shooting.

Officers responded to a home at 4412 10th Avenue North to a call of a "man with a gun" around 1:30 Monday morning.  St. Petersburg Police Spokesman Bill Proffitt said a man called 911 after getting into a verbal fight with his neighbor, Ronald Sexton, 23.

The neighbor claimed Sexton was taunting his pit bull with his own dog.  The two men began arguing then Sexton threatened him with a gun, according to police.

Proffitt said Sexton initially cooperated with the officers who arrived at his house, but then he pulled out his gun and pointed it at them.

"More than one police officer fired their weapons at the man and he died on the front porch," said Proffitt.

This incident marks the forth fatal officer involved shooting in St. Petersburg since March.

"It's just one of those things. You never know." said Proffitt.  "I'm not sure if it's because there's more guns or if it's a holiday weekend. We're not really quite sure what contributed to this particular incident."

Proffitt said Sexton's girlfriend and 10-year-old were in the house when the shooting happened.

"It's a shame," said neighbor Debra Agamaite. "Some kid's lost a dad and it's a shame that something like this happens over a dog or anything actually. But just over a dog is ridiculous."
