Two arrested in Sarasota for credit card cloning scheme

Posted: Updated:

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said they have arrested two men for trying to commit fraud at stores in Sarasota County with dozens of cloned credit cards.

Deputies say they arrested 35-year-old, Alfredo Torrella and 39-year-old Orlando Rodriguez on Friday night after they tried to buy gift cards from Home Depot and several credit cards got declined.

Deputies searched their rental vehicle and they say they found 120 counterfeit credit cards, personal information for 39 different victims and a fake driver's license.

Detectives said the suspects admitted purchasing the cards and information from someone in the Miami area for about $4,500.

Detectives believe they stopped this crime spree in the early stages and they say the men only made purchases in two stores.

The Sheriff's Office said Torrella is charged with 29 counts of Possession of Personal Identification with Intent to Use, two counts of Criminal Use of Personal Identification and one count of Trafficking in Fraudulent Credit Cards. Rodriguez is charged with three counts of Criminal Use of Personal Identification, one count of Trafficking in Fraudulent Credit Cards, Possession of a Counterfeit Driver's License, Tampering with Evidence and Obstruction.
