Spartanburg Lottery Winner Claims His Prize

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

A winning lottery ticket sold in the Upstate has been claimed.

Lottery officials say the Spartanburg man is the first $500,000 Palmetto Cash 5 winner this year, overcoming odds of 1 in more than 8 million.

The man says he doesn't play often, but bought a ticket because it's what his dad would have done. His father, a faithful lottery player, says he's not disappointed it wasn't his time to win.

"I'm just glad to know that someone does," he said.

The winner shared the moment with his dad, giving him the ticket to keep until they were both free to come to Columbia to cash it in.

The ticket was purchased from the Piedmont Petro Corner Mart #42 on Chesnee Highway in Spartanburg for the August 26th drawing. The store will receive a commission of $5,000 for selling the winning ticket.
