Street enhancement project ensures better traffic in East Tampa

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Mayor Bob Buckhorn cut a ceremonial ribbon in East Tampa Wednesday, opening a new round-about and completing the second and third phases of 22nd Street Enhancement Project.

The project was aimed at improving the streetscape and roadways for both cars and pedestrians on 22nd Street from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard south to East 21st Avenue.

"Twenty-second Street is now a gateway for all of East Tampa, welcoming visitors, businesses, and residents alike into a great community," said Buckhorn.

City officials expect traffic to get better in the area because of the new round-about, upgraded traffic signals and added bus stops and pullouts.

During the construction, while enhancing crosswalks, sidewalks, pedestrian lighting and 10-foot multi-modal trail, crews also replaced the aging water and wastewater lines.

Engineers completed the first phase of this project in 2011 improving 22nd Street between Lake Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

The total coast of the project was about $5.6 million. TIF funding from the East Tampa Community Redevelopment Area and Florida department of Transportation paid for the completion phases.
