SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the accident scene on southbound I-85 near Chesnee is cleared, and all lanes are back open.

The accident happened around 6:00 a.m. just past Exit 78. Traffic was backed up from the Highway 221 exit back to Exit 80 (Road 57) as SCHP troopers directed traffic around the crash site.

Troopers say Thomas Childers of Hickory Grove, SC was riding a motorcycle down the interstate when it had a mechanical issue. He couldn't get the bike out of the road, so he left the 1996 Harley Davidson in the outside lane.

A tractor-trailer crashed into the abandoned motorcycle, causing the early morning traffic backlog. Troopers say the driver of the tractor-trailer was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was not injured.

Childers is now charged with leaving the scene of an accident and not having a motorcycle license.
