The Hernando County Sheriff said the scene was so gruesome it shocked some of his most hardened deputies.

Authorities were called to a home in the Hernando Oaks subdivision and found a nine-month old boy slashed to death, along with his mother.

Authorities say the woman's boyfriend was the murderer, and he later killed himself.

The family had just moved down to Brooksville from Ohio back in July.

We know the names- 28-year-old Jamil Etayem, his girlfriend Roseanna Sanson, and her nine month old son carter.

The sheriff said Etayem had just recently bonded out of jail for domestic battery, and officials feel they did all they could to prevent this sort of tragedy.

A gated community like Hernando Oaks tends to offer a sense of protection.

One neighbor said, "I've always felt very safe here."

But neighbors don't expect to hear of a horrific crime right down the road.

"It's terrifying. Absolutely terrifying," said another woman.

On Thursday night, Hernando county sheriff's deputies were called out to home on Caliquen Drive, and they were shocked at what they found.

Officials say 28-year-old Jamil Etayem used a knife to kill his girlfriend, Roseanna Sanson, and her nine month old son, Carter Sanson.

He then turned the knife on himself.

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said, "It was a pretty horrific scene."

But it wasn't the first time deputies were called out to the home.

On August 20th, Sanson called 911 to report Etayem was threatening to kill himself.

Sanson called again for the same reason on August 24th, and this time, the sheriff said the deputy seemed suspicious.

Nienhuis said, "The deputy spent quite a bit of time and was able to determine that there was probable cause for domestic battery- that Ms. Sanson was battered, and the deputy did the appropriate thing and made an arrest in the case."

On August 25th, Etayem was bailed out by a family member, and ordered by the court to stay away from his girlfriend.

The sheriff's office notified Sanson of Etayem's release, and there were services available to her.

But she was killed less than two weeks later.

Nienhuis said, "Of course we can't force a victim to take any action, but we obviously try to put things in place."

Nienhuis added, "Law enforcement always questions what they could've done. But even in the last 12 hours, we've been searching everything and everything I see is that we followed all our protocols and maybe even then some, and then you still have a situation like this."

Neighbors just wish they knew sooner.

Local resident Suzy Machamer said, "There's plenty of strong women around here who would've made sure that they took her away, but they were so new, and I guess nobody knew them."

Court records show Etayem was released on $500 bond.

He was scheduled to have an arraignment on Tuesday.

News Channel 8 looked up Etayem's records in Ohio, and there were not any domestic violence charges, just traffic citations in Canton, Ohio.
