Cyclists honor hit and run victims

Posted: Updated:
CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) -

Hundreds of cyclists turned out in Clearwater today to remember one of their colleagues who was killed by a hit and run driver on Labor Day. Robert Lemon, and his girlfriend Hilary Michalak, were riding a tandem bicycle on Memorial Causeway when they were run over. Lemon died from his injuries, Michalak is still in the hospital in critical condition.

Organizers of the ride say they hope to increase exposure for the enthusiasm of cycling in the Tampa bay area and raise awareness for safe cycling.  "When people go for drivers licenses, they need to have bike classes."  Said Cathy Kamhi.  "I think they should be on a bike for two days before they get a drivers license. Just so they have a reality of what it's like to be on the road on a bike. "  Andy Steingold had similar sentiments.  "We're kind of trying to make a statement."  Said Steinhold.  "Hey, drivers beware. We're all drivers as well but you know, it's helpful if everyone in the community knows we're out on the road. "

Clearwater Police arrested 29-year-old Christopher Weed of Dunedin and charged him with the deadly hit and run accident.
