NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. -  A teenager is dead today after being struck by a train in Newberry County on Saturday evening.

According to the Newberry County Coroner’s Office, Chamone A. McGraw, 16, “was killed instantly after being struck by a northbound CSX train near Cline St” just after 6 p.m. in the city of Newberry.

McGraw was walking along the train tracks with his head down, using his cell phone at the time of the accident, succumbing to blunt force trauma injuries immediately according to Coroner Craig Newton.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor according to Newton, McGraw “may not have heard or seen the train due [to] inattentiveness while using his cell phone".
