A Greenville County school has closed several classrooms after mold was found in the school.

Greenville County School District spokesman Oby Lyles said that mold was found over the weekend in 10 rooms at the Washington Center. According to Lyles, the mold was confined to 2-to-3 feet above the floor on sheetrock and under the cove base in the rooms. Samples were taken and the air was clear, he added.

Over the weekend, school district and commercial companies certified in mold removal removed sheetrock in five of the 10 rooms. After the sheetrock was removed, further samples were taken and two of the rooms were cleared for use. After further cleaning three of the rooms were also cleared for use, while the remaining five rooms remain sealed until the cleanup can be completed.

According to Lyles, students have been cleared to return to the five rooms where the mold was removed, while the students in the five rooms that have yet to be cleared are being taught in other classrooms.

Lyles said that parents were notified about the findings on Sunday and no health issues have been reported.
